Every member of the Waterlillie Clark team brings their own story, skills, and personality to the gardens we look after. In this “Meet the Team” series, we’ve been introducing the individuals who make our work possible, and today we’re welcoming our newest team member, Joe.
Although Joe only recently joined Waterlillie Clark, his journey into gardening started long ago, shaped by family, hard work, and a genuine passion for helping people enjoy their outdoor spaces.
Inspired by family and gardens in France
Joe’s love for the outdoors started in childhood. When he lived in France with his grandparents, he spent countless hours alongside them, his grandad, a farmer, and his grandma, an avid gardener. Between the fields and the flowerbeds, Joe found himself learning about plants, machinery, and the rhythms of working with the land.
Those early experiences sparked a lifelong interest in gardening and set the foundation for the career path he would later choose. For Joe, gardening has always been about more than just work, it’s a connection to family, nature, and the satisfaction of seeing something grow.
Building skills in grounds maintenance
Joe began his professional career in 2017 when he joined Tivoli in a grounds maintenance role. He quickly impressed his colleagues with his strong work ethic, and one senior team member in particular took him under his wing. Over the next four years, Joe learned the trade inside out, developing practical skills that would serve him well in every job that followed.
When the company was bought out, Joe found himself working on large-scale military contracts. These jobs involved maintaining vast areas and using heavy machinery; tractors, industrial hedge cutters, and large-scale equipment that required training, precision, and focus.
During this time, Joe gained valuable technical experience in garden maintenance techniques like hedge cutting, strimming, and the efficient use of machinery. But while he enjoyed the challenge, he began to feel that something was missing.
A return to real gardening
Although he had gained extensive experience in grounds maintenance, Joe found himself missing the personal side of gardening. He wanted to return to work where he could see the impact of his efforts in people’s gardens and be part of a smaller, more supportive team.
That’s exactly what drew him to Waterlillie Clark. Since joining, Joe says he feels he’s found the right place, not just because of the work itself, but because of the team environment.
“It’s a close-knit team where everyone’s got each other’s backs. If someone has a problem, there’s always someone there to help. And I love being able to return that support when I can.”
For Joe, that team spirit is as important as the gardening itself. It’s what makes every day enjoyable, no matter how big or small the job.

The joy of helping clients
When asked about his favourite part of the job, Joe doesn’t hesitate: it’s making a difference for clients.
He loves being able to help people who can’t manage their gardens anymore, whether through lack of time, physical limitations, or simply not knowing where to start. Transforming a neglected garden into a usable, beautiful space is one of the most rewarding parts of his role.
“It’s seeing people’s faces when we’ve transformed their gardens. That’s what makes the hard work worth it.”
This sense of purpose is at the heart of what Joe does, and it reflects the wider mission of Waterlillie Clark, providing reliable, expert garden maintenance in Plymouth that improves not only gardens, but also the lives of the people who use them.
A love for variety – but not so much weeding!
Another thing Joe enjoys about his role is the variety. No two days are the same, one day might involve hedge cutting, another planting or lawn care, and another helping with a larger landscaping project. The constant change keeps the job interesting and allows Joe to continue learning new skills.
That said, he’s quick to admit there’s one task he’s not especially fond of: weeding! Still, it’s part of the job, and he’s always willing to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in.
Skills and expertise
Since joining the team, Joe has brought with him a solid foundation of skills, including:
- Hedge cutting – from small garden hedges to large-scale grounds, Joe’s training and experience shine through.
- Strimming, mowing and edging – keeping lawns neat and tidy.
- Machinery use – confident with both standard gardening tools and larger equipment thanks to his previous grounds work.
- General garden maintenance – a strong all-rounder, Joe can turn his hand to whatever needs doing.
His background means he’s equally at home tackling domestic gardens in Plymouth as he is working on large-scale commercial maintenance projects.
Bringing energy and personality
Beyond his skills, Joe brings plenty of personality to the team. Friendly, approachable, and hard-working, he fits right in with the supportive culture at Waterlillie Clark. He’s also known for his sense of humour, particularly when it comes to his fun fact:
People often think Joe is 15 years old, but he’s actually 28 (soon to be 29)!
It’s this combination of good humour and hard work that makes Joe such a great addition to the team.
Looking ahead
As the newest member of Waterlillie Clark, Joe is already making an impact. His mix of professional experience, passion for gardening, and commitment to helping clients makes him an asset to both the team and the people we work for.
Looking ahead, Joe is excited to continue learning, growing his skills, and supporting our mission to provide top-quality garden maintenance in Plymouth.
