🌿 TL;DR

We transformed an underused area of the garden into a defined outdoor living space, complete with a new Sahara Mix sandstone patio, bespoke timber pergola, and trellis screening for privacy.

Built on a solid sub-base and full mortar bed, the space is designed to be both durable and visually striking.

The result is a functional, structured seating area that adds depth, character, and long-term value to the garden.

The brief

This project began with a client looking to reimagine the rear of their garden. The existing patio space lacked structure and purpose, and the lower section of the garden was underutilised.

They wanted more than just paving, they wanted a destination within the garden.
A space that felt separate, private, and inviting. Somewhere to sit, entertain, and enjoy throughout the seasons.

Our approach

Rather than simply installing a new patio, we focused on creating a defined outdoor room.

Positioning was key. We carefully set out the new patio area to sit naturally within the garden, ensuring it felt intentional rather than added on.

To achieve a long-lasting result, we carried out full groundwork preparation, including excavation, installation of a compacted sub-base, and laying the paving on a full mortar bed. This ensures the patio not only looks great but performs properly over time.

The paving choice, Sahara Mix sandstone, brings warmth and variation to the space, with its natural tones working beautifully in both bright sunlight and softer evening light.

Adding structure & privacy

To give the space real presence, we introduced timber trellis screening along the boundaries.

This serves multiple purposes:

  • Softens the surrounding fencing
  • Creates a sense of enclosure without feeling boxed in
  • Provides the perfect framework for future planting and climbers

The standout feature of the project is the bespoke timber pergola, built to sit over the patio in a unique triangular configuration.

This wasn’t an off-the-shelf installation — it was carefully constructed on-site to suit the space, with structural posts securely fixed into the ground and beams set out to create clean lines and balance.

The pergola transforms the patio from a simple paved area into a true garden feature, adding height, definition, and a focal point.

The transformation

What was once an unused corner of the garden is now a purposeful, well-structured outdoor space.

The combination of:

  • Natural stone paving
  • Strong timber framework
  • Clean lines and defined edges

…has created an area that feels both practical and inviting.

It’s a space that will continue to evolve as planting is introduced, but already stands as a key feature within the garden.

The result

✔ A fully functional seating and entertaining area
✔ A visually striking pergola feature
✔ Improved layout and flow across the garden
✔ A durable, high-quality finish built to last

A note on craftsmanship

Projects like this highlight the importance of doing things properly beneath the surface.

From the ground preparation to the final detailing, every stage was completed with longevity in mind, ensuring the client not only gets an immediate visual impact, but a space that will stand the test of time.
