🌿 TL;DR
Our team recently built three new compost bays with slatted fronts to make composting easier, tidier, and more efficient. Replacing old bins, these bays create a neat system for recycling garden waste and an opportunity to improve soil health, a simple, sustainable upgrade with long-term benefits for any garden.
A passionate project
Last month, our team completed a project that we were truly excited about, constructing three custom compost bays designed for ease of use and longevity. The new bays feature slatted fronts, allowing for simple access when turning or collecting compost, as well as when filling with fresh material.
Before the build began, we deconstructed and removed the old compost bins, making way for a more functional, organised, and aesthetically pleasing system. The end result is not only highly practical but also blends naturally into the garden’s surroundings.
Our gardener Hayley summed it up perfectly:
That is a sweet set up! Every garden should have one…

Why composting matters
Composting is one of the most rewarding and environmentally friendly gardening practices. It transforms everyday garden and kitchen waste into rich, nutrient-packed compost that enhances soil structure, boosts plant health, and supports biodiversity.
Instead of discarding green waste, composting allows it to return to the earth, improving the garden’s natural balance and reducing what goes to landfill. It’s a sustainable way to recycle organic material while cutting down on the need for chemical fertilisers.
A neat and efficient system
These new compost bays create a three-stage composting system, keeping everything neat and easy to manage:
- Bay 1: for fresh waste and garden cuttings.
- Bay 2: for compost that’s actively decomposing.
- Bay 3: for mature compost ready to use in beds and borders.
Having separate bays makes it easy to rotate material through the stages, ensuring a constant supply of quality compost throughout the year. The slatted fronts provide quick access for turning or removing compost, making maintenance simple and efficient.ears nurturing their outdoor spaces. Our goal is to make the recovery process as smooth and efficient as possible, restoring safety and beauty with minimal disruption.
Sustainable gardening in action
At Waterlillie Clark, we love projects that combine practical garden design with sustainability. Building dedicated compost bays not only supports a healthier garden but also helps reduce waste and carbon footprint.
It’s a small investment that delivers long-term value, improving the soil, supporting plant life, and promoting an eco-conscious approach to garden care.
If you’re considering adding a composting area to your garden, we’d be delighted to help design and build a solution that suits your space and style.
